In the event of a storm, Université Laval can suspend all university activities. If no notice is issued, all regular university activities go ahead as scheduled.
When the University decides to suspend its activities, the information goes out through all the following communication channels.
- By email: The Communications Department will send an email to let you know
- On the ulaval.ca homepage
- In Université Laval's digital academic environment: monPortail
- Via Université Laval’s social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter
If no notice is issued, all regular university activities go ahead as scheduled.
The situation will be assessed and the information sent out by 6 a.m. at the latest for activities that start before 3:30 p.m. and by 2 p.m. at the latest for activities that start after 3:30 p.m.
What are the criteria for deciding to suspend activities?
- The weather conditions and predictions issued by Environment Canada
- The difficulty public transit is having moving around campus and across the region
- Road conditions, as observed by Ministère des Transports
- Road conditions, as observed by police forces in the region
- The condition of parking lots, roads, and building entrances on campus, as observed by security staff
The University can decide not to suspend activities even if some parts of the road network are affected by severe weather conditions. In such situations, it is up to each individual to stay safe.
When activities are suspended at Université Laval, here’s what it means.
For the student community
Suspension of classes in attendance
- All classes on campus and in downtown Québec City buildings are suspended.
- Faculty, department and service heads will provide details on how to resume cancelled activities.
Distance learning activities are maintained
- All distance courses, synchronous and asynchronous are maintained.
- Co-modal courses are maintained but will be held in synchronous mode only.
- The course sites on mon Portail remain accessible.
Suspension and postponement of exams on campus and in buildings in downtown Quebec City.
- On-campus exams are suspended and rescheduled.
- Université Laval will attempt to reschedule the exam within a few days of the scheduled date including weekend days. If it is not possible to hold the exam before the end of the semester, it will be rescheduled for the beginning of the winter semester, at a date to be determined.
- Students will be notified by email as soon as possible.
Suspension and postponement of off-campus exams for distance learning
- If Université Laval announces a suspension of on-campus activities, all off-campus examinations scheduled to take place that same day are also suspended, regardless of the weather conditions elsewhere in Quebec.
- If one or more off-campus examination sites suspend their activities, without Laval University suspending its on-campus activities, only the examinations scheduled to take place at these sites will be suspended. Before travelling, students are advised to check whether their examination center has announced a closure or a suspension of its activities (see the list of examination centers and their contact information).
- In all cases, students will be notified by email as soon as possible. Retakes will be organized on a case-by-case basis.
For staff
- Staff members continue to work from home. However, if circumstances prevent a staff member from providing the same service as usual, that person is asked to contact their manager.
- Staff members required on campus will be contacted by their manager.
