A lockdown is a measure that aims to protect building occupants from a direct, active threat of violence on campus. A lockdown may be required if there is an armed individual, active shooter, or other individual who is directly and seriously threatening the lives or the physical integrity of people on campus.
When a lockdown advisory goes out, occupants in the buildings involved must stay inside and barricade the rooms where they are if possible. The lockdown aims to keep people who could be exposed to the danger safe until the situation is brought under control and the danger has passed.
- Prepare to protect and defend yourself by any and all means possible
- Stay in the room where you are when the lockdown order is issued
- Tell people in the hall and get them into your room, but don’t get slowed down by other people: act fast
- If you’re in an open area, go to the nearest room
- Barricade yourself in: lock the doors or use heavy objects and furniture to block them
- Stay away from doors, windows, and high-visibility areas with lots of glass
- Spread out and lie down on the ground
- Close and lock the windows and shut the blinds
- Turn of all lights, screens, and projectors
- Stay quiet and put phones on silent mode to make it seem like no one’s there
- Only use phones for essential calls to emergency services
- Once you’re barricaded, do not open the door for any reason
- Stay in the room and wait for the emergency advisory to end before exiting the room
- Follow the instructions of emergency personnel and no one else
During police intervention, it is normal for everyone to be considered a potential threat. Stay calm, don’t make any sudden movements, raise your hands and follow instructions.
If you’re exposed to an active shooter or armed individual, you must act fast to save your life. Know what you should do in case of an armed intrudor or active shooter.
If a fire alarm goes off during a lockdown measure, wait for instructions from the authorities. Look for signs of fire (flames, smoke, smell, etc.) to decide if you need to evacuate or not: continuously reassess the situation and wait for instructions. Be extremely vigilant: it could be a false alarm meant to bring building occupants out of hiding and in harm’s way.
When in lockdown, don’t pull a fire alarm pull station (red case) unless there are signs of fire. Fire alarms must not be used to alert building occupants of another emergency situations.
The outer doors of the building must stay unlocked so that emergency services can get inside. Stay out of open areas, find a safe space, secure your immediate environment, and put up a barricade, if possible.
